At the end of this January, often synonymous with "good resolutions", I invite you to deconstruct and twist the famous myth of motivation.
If you are exasperated by spirited people, read this :
Is motivation a myth?
Yes, because motivation goes (too fast, too often) and comes (too slowly, too hardly).
Some days it's heaven - you wake up energized, ready to give yourself the good kick in the butt you need to achieve your goals.
Other days, it's more like a nightmare: that motivation will be completely absent or, even worse, gone! Everyday life seems like an insurmountable effort.
And guess what? It doesn't matter.
Yes, it doesn't matter.
Because ...
You don't need motivation or inspiration to get into good habits.
Reread this sentence as many times as necessary. Write it on a post-it note and stick it on your computer screen, use it as a reminder on your phone, tattoo it on your arm (or maybe not :)... in short, do whatever it takes to keep it in mind.
In fact, what differentiates an "expert" from an "amateur" is not motivation... but action.
You see, the "experts" hide their heads under the comforter for a moment (including the author of this newsletter!) and find ways to get the job done, no matter how they feel.
We usually assume that motivation and inspiration - in other words, a particular mental state - come before action.
Sometimes this is true.
But most of the time, it's not.
Action often occurs before motivation and the desired mental state.
For example, let's say one day you decide to go for a walk. You're not exactly galvanized by the prospect per se, but your brain is in a fog and could use a little fresh air.
At first, you'll sort of hang on, cursing the cold and wind, staring at the ground.
After 5 or 10 minutes, the brisk breeze starts to clear your head.
You straighten your posture and breathe more deeply. Your stride lengthens and your hips loosen up. Now you're walking with pride. You have a purpose. The movement really energizes you.
After 20 to 30 minutes, you finish that walk with a bang.
Your foggy brain is gone, replaced by crystal clear thoughts. Your body is energized. You feel (re)connected to life and the universe.
You have now found that state of mental motivation.
What changed? You acted first.
Here are the golden rules of change:
** Action is more important than information. **
** Doing is more important than knowing. **
No matter what you know, only consistent daily action creates change.
So... what is one small, meaningful action YOU can take today? Within the hour? Within 5 minutes? Here and now?
Don't know where to start, or how to maintain these daily actions so that they become habits and part of you, your identity?
